In Order to Live – Yeonmi Park Book Review

I had only learned of this young woman a week ago. My boyfriend mentioned her name, we looked her up and found lots of scathing reviews from liberal journalists who don’t know the first thing about psychology or survivors of communist countries. As soon as I heard more about the story, I wanted to read it immediately to see for myself. My step/adopt father came to the U.S. in 1956 from Hungary. Post-WWII, after failing as an ally (luckily), their country was communist until 1989. I grew up learning about communism, Russians and fearing this type of lifestyle. I also, myself, wrote a book about 1956, The Uprisers, in which I did an extensive amount of research. And, I am a trauma specialist in my day job.

Within three days of digging into this wonderful storytelling (with the help of Maryanne Vollers), I was mesmerized by the graphic details. I know nothing about North Korea, with the exception of media talk about Kim Jong Un. He appears to be a frightening spectacle of himself and an extremely immature young man – entitled you could also say, growing up a spoiled royal. Absolutely nothing in comparison to Prince William and Princess Catherine. Only recently, we learned of his balloon dumping in South Korea, where these plastic flyers hauled excrement for Kim Jong Un’s personal enjoyment. He was retaliating against South Korea for sending their own balloons with food, supplies but also anti-North Korean pamphlets. I get it that he was upset, but excrement? This is the antic of a child, not an adult.

When I learned about Yeonmi and her families story, which was very legitimate and realistic in regard to a communist country, it was hard to fathom nonetheless. Russia withholding food supplies and North Korea doing nothing about this. Being told, as little children, to refer to the U.S. citizens as “American Bastards.” Of course, this is not too much worse than our current school system teaching little kids to “pick a sex,” and passing out sexually provocative books for them to read. At least the teachers in North Korea are forced to do these things. As I continue to think about this indoctrination in our school systems and colleges pushing on the DEI bandwagon and creating anti-Semitic young adults, we are looking at Europe 1928 all over again. I have often said – and yes we are very far off – but I see our country turning into the communist direction. I have spoken to ex-pats from Hungary who have agreed as well. Schools putting on drag shows for children, hanging pride flags – which is an adult subject, and delineating freedom of speech, we are creating an informal young pioneer movement.

Growing up in an environment where Yeonmi’s father and mother did the best they could, under the circumstances. Sometimes eating, sometimes not. It was a tale of sink or swim and in their case, feast or famine. Many times, famine was the challenge at the table.

Everything that the liberal journalists claimed Yeonmi “lied” about or “changed her story on” were all explained in the book. Yeonmi quotes Joan Didion at the beginning of her book, re-stating “We tell ourselves stories in order to live.” It is normal for a trauma survivor to block things in their life, avoid telling, make things sound better than they are – denial. She explains how she came to finally tell her true story and why she shared different versions in South Korea (had just came to freedom in this country very shortly before). How she became an advocate for Human Trafficking, at an Irish Youth Conference, before telling people that she herself was trafficked in China.

Of course a young woman and her mother will be trafficked going from one communist country to another. Duh! They don’t speak the language, they have no money or passport, they are there illegally, and they are women. All wars are fought for power and all women are used and abused, kidnapped, sold, tortured and raped when men find them in any circumstances – extremely vulnerable and desperate, war or illegal alien. You see border crossings on TV, but does anyone really believe that none of these women – who cross alone – have not been raped a few times? China was trying to control their population excess and only allowed women to have one child, for many decades. They even had “grandmothers” scouting out the areas or at the factory, turning in second time pregnancies. Like with India who’s lower castes began a practice of female infanticide. Now, both countries are desperate for wives for the men. Too bad for them, but great for human traffickers.

One look at the cover of this book, an attractive young woman, at the time only 13 years old when she crossed into China. She was a hot commodity. She is now, here in the U.S. where she has become a conservative social media sensation. As a survivor, she isn’t doing too bad using her strengths. I admire her stamina. Most women would have failed to get through this horrific ordeal, and many of these trafficked North Korean women are still “married” to men in China. They will never get a chance at freedom. Just like most women around the world, Russians, Philippines, Thailand, most of the Asian countries that are third world, communist countries, Africa, extremely vulnerable, impoverished women baited by perpetrators (both men and women), into the slave market. Even here in the U.S., we are not immune to pricks like Jeffrey Epstein. And yet, now, the LGBTQ market wants to allow for pedophilia. They have not only lost their minds, but lost their ability for the average decent person to have sympathy for their cause. Everything they once claimed they were not, they are now allying with. You have to be careful which cause you give money to. Just look at the BLM founders who soaked up all your White stupidity and are living in mansions. I knew this would go bad when I saw the founders were from Oakland and L.A. I remember the “non-profits,” that were formed in Oakland as a worker with CPS.

If you have read anything at all about Yeonmi Park in the media, put your money where your mouth is and read her book. Do a little research on communism and human trafficking and open your eyes to what is really going on in the world. In your very own country. No one is innocent or free. Just look at the two clowns running for president in November. We are a laughing stock of the free world. But, for Yeonmi Park, it is luxury compared to the filthy dictatorship that she grew up under.
